Advice more useful than 'You probably did something to deserve it, just cooperate,' I'm guessing?

Oh cooperation is a big one. I mean not that you did something to deserve it just that it's usually a pretty bad idea to punch a cop or whatever

Otherwise the advice is basically to keep quiet. Don't tell them anything and they won't be able to use anything against you

Yeah. It's pretty standard practice for us, for those who actually make it to the Tower after they're arrested. It's all REALLY broken and stupid. The police work MUCH better here with MUCH less cruelty.

Yeah, and so most of the time they end up with the wrong person, because of course you'd sooner admit guilt than let that happen to you. Anyway - yeah. Not for me, it was for my best friend - they'd decided he was my accomplice and were going to hurt him unless I talked. So what else could I do?

Well yeah. They'll just say what they think you want to hear right? It's much better just to talk to people

Anyway I'm really sorry that happened to you in the first place. Pretty much anyone would have made a deal at that point

Yeah, definitely. Anyway, it didn't turn out THAT bad - I held up my end of the deal but he broke his, which I KNEW was going to happen even when I was making the deal. But then I saved his stupid life and apparently my selfless nobility haunted him ever since and made him turn his life around. PLUS Jakob and I both ended up getting away. So the moral is, if you can't be smart, be inspirational.

You and Jakob. Kind of assumed you'd want to stay as far away as possible from the guy who arrested you

Me and Jakob are still friends, yeah. He's not a revolutionary now, though - he really never was. He fled the country (that was what I was talking about earlier, with the documents - it was him who got smuggled out), but I stayed behind to keep fighting. He sends me letters every few months telling me how brilliant it is in Bruges and how I should come and join him. Weirdly, though, the guy who arrested me? Turned into one of my best friends here in this world. Until he got Ported home. I thought Mandrake was the worst, most loathsome little toad back home, but here...I really got the measure of him. It's weird the twists that get thrown at you, isn't it?

It makes sense though. People can change and I know a lot of people that used this place as a blank slate. Like they could really improve themselves while they're here. It's a pretty brave thing to do I think

I do, too. Those sorts of people are quite heroic...And he was so brave, too. His childhood was so awful, and he was so brainwashed by everything they taught him, but he threw it all off. It's more than I'd be able to do, I think. I wish there were some way to really support the people trying to make a change.

Not really. I mean, you remember when I lied about my name, yeah? It was to hide from him, and to dig into what he was ACTUALLY doing here when he was pretending to be nice. (Never mind that he really WAS doing decent things.) I tried to undermine a few of his friendships, too, because I was just so furious that they liked someone who had done what he did. Honestly, I was really quite beastly.

Well...We talked a lot. And...You remember the thing with the Hornets. Obviously. He came to help rescue me.

That's one way of starting to talk about it. And for the record I'm glad that you guys managed to talk it out.

Me, too. I'm so glad. I mean - both because it really was good to know him, and because he opened my eyes to so much. He really made me THINK about who my enemies are, who I take them to be...It's because of him that I really try to understand who I started out hating. As best I can. It's a hard thing to remember, but I really do try. And I hope that because of that, I'll not be that shitty the next time I'm in that sort of situation. God, it's bloody hard though, isn't it. Trying to be a good person is so exhausting.

You're right though, trying to understand people like that is really hard. Did that make you rethink that plan you had? When you first got here?

Truthfully...Yeah. That and realizing that I really haven't got what it takes to be some military leader. When people got hurt coming for me, back when all that happened with the Hornets, I just couldn't take it. Anyway, now I've got another plan, but it's going to sort of tear the world apart and so that's why I've got to become Prime Minister or whatever it is I'll be. So that I can manage all of that when it comes.

I'm glad. I mean not that your new plan will tear the world apart but you already know I didn't think that that was the best plan in the world. If the whole Hornet thing showed us anything it's that people would probably be willing to follow you back too

And if future you manages to figure out how to end it without involving militaries isn't that way better?

It's better, yeah. I really do think it is. Keep it secret, though. That I've changed my mind about the plan. I haven't told nearly anyone about it, because if someone from my world showed up and learned about it they could definitely ruin it - and they would, too, if they were a magician.
